(04/01) The Failure of Good Intentions

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

In reading this chapter where Samuel rebukes Saul for his actions, I am reminded of the old saying, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.”  There is much truth here.  In our story, Saul waits for Samuel to show up at Gilgal so Samuel can offer a sacrifice before Israel goes into battle.  After seven days, Saul becomes impatient in waiting for Samuel and offers the sacrifice himself before the battle.  Saul wants the Lord’s blessing on the battlefield and wants to have the sacrifice offered.  His sin is that he cannot offer the sacrifice.  When Samuel finally arrives, he rebukes Saul’s sin. How often we become impatient with God.  We want his blessing; we want to serve him.  If he would operate on our timeline, life would be so much better.  So we try and encourage the process along in the name of trying to serve him.  God’s timing is perfect.  His providence is without fault.  In our good intentions, we leave the path of God’s will to try and serve him in what we believe to be right.  Waiting on God is hard.  We are a society that wants instant gratification.  Patience is a virtue.  Are you tired of waiting on God for something?  Are you praying about an issue that God seems not to be hearing or at least not answering?  Resist the urge to push out on your own before God has opened the door.  He has a perfect plan for your life.  Be ready to go when he opens the way.  Success is in the Lord.
